ChatGPT Ads in India: What Marketers Need to Know Before Testing

 ·  8 min read

ChatGPT has become a significant research environment in India, and OpenAI is now turning part of that usage into an advertising channel. The important detail for marketers is that two milestones happened in August: ads began rolling out to eligible Indian users through the Free and Go tiers, while self-service buying through Ads Manager followed as part of the broader global expansion.

What Launched in India, and When?

On 27 August 2026, OpenAI began rolling ChatGPT Ads to logged-in adults using the Free and Go plans in India. The initial rollout included more than 50 brands and agency support from WPP and Omnicom, according to reporting on the launch.

Then, on 31 August, OpenAI announced that self-service access through Ads Manager was launching in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. OpenAI also said ChatGPT Ads were already available in more than 40 countries through its Ads Solutions team and agency and technology partners.

OpenAI’s 31 August announcement confirms the self-service milestone.

Those are separate milestones. The first is the user-facing advertising rollout in India. The second is the opening of direct advertiser purchasing through Ads Manager. Keeping them separate avoids treating 31 August as the date ads first appeared for Indian users.

Who Can Actually See ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI says ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not have ads. OpenAI also says it does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18. Ads are clearly labelled and displayed separately from ChatGPT’s response.

OpenAI’s current Ads in ChatGPT guidance lists the eligible and excluded plans.

That audience definition matters more than a generic statement that ChatGPT has a large user base. An advertiser testing ChatGPT Ads is primarily buying access to eligible ad-supported users, not every person who uses ChatGPT.

How Large Is the Indian Opportunity?

OpenAI said in February 2026 that India had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. That figure covers ChatGPT users across the free and paid tiers, so it should not be treated as the number of people who will see ads. It is still useful context for understanding why India matters to the platform.

OpenAI reported the India figure in its February 2026 India announcement.

For advertisers, the relevant question is narrower: how many of those users are on eligible plans, how often they encounter an ad opportunity, and how many take a valuable action after seeing one? Those are campaign questions rather than headline user-count questions.

How ChatGPT Ads Differ From Search Ads

Traditional search advertising is built around a query and a results page. ChatGPT Ads operate inside a conversational environment. OpenAI says its ads system considers signals including the context and intent of the current conversation, the ad’s landing page, title and copy, advertiser-provided context hints and, where enabled, selected signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience.

OpenAI’s advertiser documentation explains selection and delivery.

The context hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in a specific conversation. That changes how marketers should think about targeting. The useful question is not simply “Which keyword should I bid on?” It is “Which customer situations make this offer relevant?”

How ChatGPT Ads Are Bought

OpenAI’s current advertiser documentation describes two buying options: CPM and CPC. A Reach objective is designed to optimise for impressions and charges per 1,000 impressions. A Clicks objective is designed to optimise for clicks and charges per valid click.

See OpenAI’s current pricing and buying documentation.

That gives marketers two straightforward testing frameworks. A brand campaign can evaluate reach and downstream brand behaviour. A performance campaign can evaluate clicks, qualified enquiries, purchases or another conversion event. The correct choice depends on the business objective.

Do Ads Influence ChatGPT’s Answers?

No. OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. The advertising system and chat model are separate, and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter the assistant’s responses. OpenAI also says that seeing an ad does not mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser.

What Buying an Ad Does Not Get You

  • A recommendation in ChatGPT’s answer
  • An organic citation
  • Higher Google rankings
  • Higher Google AI Overview visibility
  • Inclusion in every relevant AI comparison
  • Access to users’ private chats or memories

Those are separate outcomes. Paid ChatGPT visibility and organic AI visibility can support the same acquisition strategy, but they require different work.

What Advertisers Should Test First

Start With a Specific Customer Situation

Choose one use case where your product is genuinely relevant. A B2B software company, for example, might target research conversations around a specific workflow rather than trying to advertise to everyone interested in software.

Match the Landing Page to the Promise

The landing page should answer the question implied by the ad. A specific ad that sends users to a generic homepage creates unnecessary friction and makes attribution harder.

Measure Business Outcomes

Track more than impressions and clicks. For lead generation, separate raw enquiries from qualified enquiries. For ecommerce, connect the campaign to purchases and revenue. If the sales cycle is long, track the downstream stages that indicate genuine demand.

Keep the Test Narrow Enough to Learn

A first campaign should answer a question. Does this audience context produce qualified demand? Does one landing page outperform another? Does reach create branded search or direct traffic later? A test with too many variables cannot answer those questions cleanly.

How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost in India?

OpenAI currently supports CPM and CPC buying, but there is no single universal ChatGPT Ads price that should be quoted as the expected cost for every advertiser. Current account availability, campaign objective, market and buying setup should be checked in Ads Manager.

Check current Ads Manager availability by country.

Some Indian launch coverage reported a daily minimum budget of ₹725 for the initial self-service setup. Because platform buying requirements can change, treat that as a launch-period detail rather than a permanent rate card.

Why AEO Still Matters if You Run ChatGPT Ads

A person can see an advertisement and then conduct a separate research conversation. They may ask for alternatives, reviews, comparisons, pricing or evidence. Paid exposure does not control the answer to those later questions.

That is where AEO becomes relevant. AEO is about making a business and its content easier for AI systems to understand, evaluate and potentially cite. The work includes clear expertise, useful content, credible references, consistent business information and pages that directly answer customer questions.

In practice, paid and organic AI visibility should be measured separately. One is sponsored exposure. The other is earned visibility.

Privacy and Audience Considerations

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive access to users’ chats, chat history, memories or personal details. Advertisers receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information such as total views or clicks.

The Practical Takeaway

ChatGPT Ads are now a real paid channel in India, but the rollout needs to be understood in two parts: ads reached eligible Indian Free and Go users in late August, and self-service Ads Manager access followed on 31 August.

India’s scale makes the channel worth watching. OpenAI reported more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India in February, but only eligible ad-supported users are part of the advertising audience.

The strategic lesson is straightforward. Use ChatGPT Ads when you want paid exposure inside a conversational environment. Use SEO and AEO when you want earned visibility, search traffic and the possibility of being cited in answers. Do not treat one as a shortcut to the other.

Zearch Digital can help businesses evaluate the paid side through performance marketing and Google Ads, while its AEO and SEO work focuses on organic visibility across traditional and AI-led search.
